A profile of the eminent fashion brand Gucci as well as which celebrities wear it.
The fashion brand of Gucci was established by Guccio Gucci in Florence in 1921. Regarded as one of the most esteemed fashion brands worldwide, the brand has had an unsteady history full of family arguments. When Guccio died in 1953, four of his sons took over the business but every stage of the company's progress was blemished by the brother's failure to agree on issues.
The brand continued to be one of the leading luxury goods institutions in the world until the late 1970s, when a sequence of catastrophic commercial choices and family wrangles brought the firm to the brink of liquidation, compounded by the fact that substandard counterfeits of Gucci products were swamping the market and ruining the company name.
Gucci Overhaul in the 1980s
When one of the sons perished in 1983 the company experienced a huge overhaul led by Maurizio Gucci who became the solitary family member in control of the brand. He appointed Dawn Mello as Executive Vice President who consecutively drew the talented Geoffrey Beene and a young college fellow by the name of Tom Ford.
It wasn't until Tom Ford took over as creative director though that the company's wealth radically improved. In his first year in control, he was accredited with putting the desirability back into fashion presenting skinny satin shirts and metallic patent boots. In 1995, he hired renowned French stylist Carine Roitfeld and revered photographer Mario Testino to create a series of contemporary advertisement campaigns for the firm. Between 1995 and 1996, vending at Gucci improved by 90%.
By 1999, the company, which had been almost ruined when Ford entered, was priced at approximately $4.3billion. Today Gucci is still burgeoning under the creative direction of Ford apprentice Frida Giannini.
Gucci's Ongoing Popularity
Ever since Tom Ford restored Gucci in the 1990s, it has become a sought-after must have label for modern glamorous woman worldwide. Accessories remain one of the brand's fortes carving out a good niche in the market. But above all else the 1960s afforded Gucci with some of their most distinguished motifs - the prominent GG symbol, the Flora silk headscarf and the classic Jackie O bag which are still best sellers in the present day.
Every star who works off a sexy image loves a dash of Gucci, including Rihanna, Madonna, and Jennifer Lopez. Yet their luxury timeless status also attracts the more understated and ladylike girls such as Cameron Diaz and Scarlett Johansson.
