Women’s Cropped Trousers: Fashion Essential

Women’s Cropped Trousers
Short And Sweet

I’ve always had somewhat of a love hate relationship with cropped trousers. While I adore their chic appearance, with a sexy slip of ankle on show, my small stature has meant that I routinely avoid them because of a dreaded fear of decreasing my height and appearing stumpy. Times when I have bought a pair in the vain hope of “pulling them off” have inevitably resulted in me glancing at myself in a shop window and grimacing at the legless person in front of me.

Despite vowing to never buy another pair, on a recent trip to Paris I fell in love with the vertically challenged trousers all over again after seeing them on the fabulously fashionable Parisian women. In colours and neutrals, with flats and heels, cropped trousers where everywhere, and they never looked so good.

A versatile clothing item, cropped trousers can be worn almost throughout the year with many women keeping them in their wardrobes well into winter. Structured styles are office favourites during the summer months – paired with a blazer and shirt they are a sartorial burst of fresh air to what can be a dour wardrobe. Bright hues, relaxed fabrics and quirky patterns define the casual version. Shoe lovers are also big fans of the cropped trouser, as they allow ample opportunity to show a heel, sandal or ballet flat off to full affect.

Catwalk Appearances

While cropped trousers are not a new fashion style, each season brings with it new interpretations. Neutral colours were popular with designers this year – black, grey and beige were particularly big on the catwalk. Colour is creeping in too; cropped trousers adding a bright pop to any outfit, as seen at Louis Vuitton.

Style wise, structured and tailored cropped trousers dominated the spring/summer 2011 season. Casual style was also well represented however with slouchy trousers from Haider Ackermann and wide leg pants from Sonia Rykiel.

Celebrity Endorsement

Celebrities have always been a fan of the versatile cropped trouser. Cheryl Cole favours bright hues; Cameron Diaz pairs hers with chunky wedges; Gwyneth Paltrow champions the tailored version:

 How To Wear
My new found enthusiasm for cropped trousers had led me to believe that everyone should be able to conquer a fashion item, no matter their size, with a little bit of savvy style adjustments. Here are some tips to help vertically challenged women tackle the cropped trouser:
  • When pairing cropped trousers with a top, ensure the top is not overly baggy or long as this will elongate the torso and shorten your legs.
  • Shorter ladies should stick to sandals when wearing flats with cropped trousers. The flashes of flesh will give extra length to the ankles.
  • Peep toe and strappy heels look best when adding height with cropped trousers.
  • Beige colours help to lengthen legs for short women.
