A Trip Into The Sartorial Space Age
If you’re looking for a more intense look for your wardrobe this autumn/winter, then bypass all other trends, bid farewell to minimalism and channel ‘Futuristic’. It could be fashion’s love affair with 1960s chic that has brought sartorial space age back to the forefront of the runways – but whatever the reason, it has been a long time since fashion ran with spacey futurism, so I urge you to embrace the forward thinking designers point of view.Modernist fabrics are essential for this look and have been seen on a multitude of catwalks. Fabrics include ink encased plastics and silver latex, whilst the look is further galvanised by the sharp tailored silhouette and flashes of metallic.
On The Runways
Sci-fi modernism is making a bold statement this A/W; it’s fashion forward and doesn’t have to be a nightmare to wear. The look can be injected into an everyday outfit and integrated with the rest of your wardrobe. The sartorial, statement pieces decorating the runways are a little less ‘everyday’ and a lot more ‘space hopper’. The designers declaring their love for futuristic pieces include Giambattista Valli, Balmain, Marc jacobs, Victor & Rolf and Prada. Dramatic and expressive, the art of layering combined with digital winter prints are key to this trend.
Celebrity Trend Setters
Celebrities are no stranger to working the trend, proving that you don’t need to be encased in foil or head to toe silver to channel the science fiction look. Miley Cyrus, Brandy, Beyonce and Kate Moss all ensure that the look bears their stamp of individualism.
How To Wear Futuristic
- A power silhouette is a key aspect of the Futuristic trend. Look for big shoulders for a commanding top half and then keep the rest of your outfit streamlined.
- Look out for astructured puffball styles, as they will add curves to petite figures.
- Architectural heels are a great addition to give your outfit a touch of Space Age chic. Perspex or over embellished work best.
- For a trend this dominant, pick a statement piece such as a dress or jacket and make that the futuristic focus of the outfit. Keep the rest simple.
- Look out for metallic pieces and varying fabrics. Metallic leggings or fitted trousers (as seen on the Balmain runways) work beautifully with a suede boot.
- As a subtle touch, try silver bangles or silver earrings to add a little embellishment to your look.
- Keep an eye out for circuitry inspired patterns and exaggerated silhouettes.
- Unless you want to look like an extra from Star Wars or Pans Labyrinth, leave the cone shaped hair do’s alone. Whilst this look is all about embracing the bold and the strange, remember to tone down your futuristic look with classic pieces and make it relevant to your current wardrobe.
