Eccentric Couture
This season, being fashion forward is all about throwing something on. Yes, literally throwing a few items on and creating an eclectic, fashion diverse outfit. No organising or premeditating an outfit, Eccentric Couture is all about a mish mash of varying fabrics, patterns, textures and styles. A very British trend, we are seeing the ‘eccentric lady’ emerge for this season on the autumn/winter 2011 runways – she is aristocratic, bold and unapologetic. Though this trend does have a sense of ‘crazy’ about it, the key to its sartorial success is the brave and shameless approach of throwing on a peculiar mix; and not caring if you get it all wrong.
Celebrity Influence
Celebrity culture has always had its fans of the eccentricity trend but lately the boundaries are being pushed so far, that it’s impossible to tell high fashion from the fashion careless. It begs the question; are those who repel fashion actually the pinnacle of style? With the shabby chic Helena Bonham Carter recently becoming the new muse for Marc Jacobs, it has never been more fashionable to wear whatever you want, and disregard the rules of the sartorial style guide.
On The Runways
With rich colourings, tapestry and a multitudes of layering, the runways were revelling in capricious couture – combining severe elegance and off beat, erratic tailoring. Bottega Veneta, Marni and Vivienne Westwood – the reigning Queen of Eccentricity – were all on hand to show the masses how to layer up completely clashing looks.
Hints & Tips:
- There are no hard and fast rules for this trend. In fact, the more you disobey and flaunt the rulebook, the better your look will be.
- Embrace all fabrics and styles and don’t be afraid to clash your textures and prints.
- Try lots of items on together and then you can always shed layer by layer until you are happy with the look you have created. Remember, more is more.
- Don’t allow your look to be too polished; this should be effortless and require minimal dressing and preparation time.
- Look for rich embroided fabrics for subtle embellishment in your outfits.
- Cropped jackets or floral kimonos look beautiful as an outer layer to plain vests and give enough of a texture clash without being too overdone.
- Midi skirts work lovely with this trend; they are versatile and you can pair them with chiffon blouses, neck ties and accessorise wildly for a touch of eccentricity.
- Leave hair as tousled as possible – wavy, undone curls are a lovely addition to an eccentric outfit. For something a little more low key – try the wang plait. A fishtail, messy plait.
- Keep trying new ensembles to see what you feel most comfortable with. Converse with leather leggings, denim shorts with tailored blouses, panama hats and neck ties… all key items paired together, whilst keeping the look relevant in an everyday context.
