Dotty for Spots
Autumn/Winter 2011 shall be the season when I conquer my fear of the polka dot. I haven’t got around to discussing this phobia with a therapist yet but I’m pretty sure it’s because they remind me of clowns. From the brutally applied blusher paint to the balloon trousers, clowns are all about spots and they just happen to be a sandwich short of a picnic at the same time. However, there is nothing water-spurting-corsage or pie-in-the-face mental about the polka dot this coming season.
Spots were reincarnated in all colours, designs and textures; most of which I could actually wear without thinking I should be making balloon animals at a kid’s party!
On the Catwalk
Look to Marc Jacobs for full on circle inspiration; his polka dots were worked into every trend from metallic to monochrome, from forties glamour to a bit of fetish. Yet, the line was completely wearable too. I love the black sequins on autumn’s winning shades of midnight blue and wine reds.
Where Mr. Jacobs kept his models demure with covered skin and cabochon encrusted pillbox hats, Stella McCartney incorporated polka dots for a bit of evening fun and sex-appeal. Circles appeared embroidered onto tulle material; like 21st century flapper dresses or on sheer panels of black dresses giving a cheeky peek of skin.
David Koma also celebrated the female form with spots on body-con dresses and fitted skirts. The prints were so seductive in the way they accentuated the silhouette that I didn’t even notice the extensive use of pom-poms!
Celebrity Circles
Beyoncé has already been sporting Marc Jacobs’ spotty glamour, whilst Liv Tyler and Kate Winslet rocked Stella McCartney’s sheer pieces on the red carpet. Our favourite new Duchess chose an Issa dress in classic navy and white polka-dots for her wedding rehearsal and Cheryl Cole started off so well in the US; just avoiding the
Hints and Tips
- Brights and polka dots are not trends for combining this season; keep to darker colours, monochrome or neutral shades.
- It’s black and white, the spots themselves generally came in these colours only; multi-colour is another no-no unless you want to look like a party-paper napkin.
- Spotty accents to an outfit are perfect for those dipping their minimalist toes into the trend. A black and white clutch can complete a LBD, spotted shoes will not overwhelm your outfit, and a printed scarf can add a bit of flair on those cold winter days.
- One polka-dot print makes enough of a statement; two or more and you could become a walking optical illusion.
- Polka dots can really liven up a mundane work wardrobe – though smaller spots are more subtle for the office.
- Petite figures should really avoid larger spots that could overwhelm them.
- Polka dots show an ability to have fun with fashion but can look a little childish if worn incorrectly. Sheer spotty tights are ones to watch out for and should probably only be worn by those reaching, suffering or celebrating the end of puberty.
- Work spots into a forties pencil skirt or sixties shift, complete with Peter Pan collar, to combine trends with the utmost sophistication.
